Blurb:

Emerson LeBlanc lost more than an acquisition. He lost the woman he loves.

There’s no redemption for a man with his past. No future for a relationship built on stalking and kidnapping. At least that’s what he believes.

When he meets Daphne again, she’s not a piece of art. She’s a woman determined to paint a new path. For herself. For him.

Except the ocean holds more than shadows. It holds danger that could ruin them both.

My Review:

Last Resort by Amelia Wilde is the final book in her The Collector Trilogy. It concludes the story of Daphne Morelli and Emerson Leblanc. Their love is one of obsession because he was an obsessive collector and she an obsessive painter but they were also obsessed with each other.

The story is very descriptive especially about the ocean and its affect on both characters. Amelia uses lots of colourful imagery and has artist flair with her words to immerse the reader into an artists mindset. Some of the narrative was a bit confusing but I think the author did this to make it seem you were inside Emerson’s mind.

After the thrilling ending to book two when the whole Morelli family were desperate to find her, we find out what happened when she was rescued and everyones reaction to what Emerson had done. Daphne and Emerson are two tortured souls who have been forced to separate and are struggling to survive life apart. Emerson’s anxiety is high and his panic attacks are coming constantly like the waves in the ocean, that they are almost killing him. Daphne is missing him and is so worried over where he is, that she cannot and doesn’t want to paint.

“I miss her like my heart has been torn out. I miss her like I love her.”

Daphne is still confused over her feelings for Emerson. One minute he seems so good then at a flick of a switch he seems evil. Throughout her ordeal he cared and looked after her, just like he promised he would. She had great difficulty persuading her family that he never once hurt her.  More about her childhood is revealed and I liked the heart to hearts she has with members of her family.

Their relationship is a dark and twisted affair but is also full of love even though neither of them know how to show it properly. He is messed up and she is very naive having been so sheltered. Their interactions are very passionate and her painting becomes very interesting. She ends up so good for him and helps him battle his anxiety. We really see his vulnerable side and how much his childhood has affected him but I was pleased he fought his demons when she really needed him. Everyone knows he doesn’t deserve Daphne but after all he goes through I am glad they get back together.

It was good getting more insight into both the couple’s families and it was interesting to find out why both their fathers behaved the way they did. There is just something about Leo Morelli, he is a joy to read about even if his possessiveness is over the top. I love how protective he is over Daphne and I felt so sorry for the torment he goes through trying to deal with her relationship with Emerson.

Their love was never simple, they had to really fight for it. She is the only person he ever let into his life and she helped push his boundaries to cope with the outside world and find a balance. Daphne certainly matures during the whole story and finally stood up for what she wanted. The storyline of the trilogy was good but I felt it didn’t flow as well as some of her other books and I struggled as much as the characters did at times.

The Midnight Dynasty:

If you have liked this trilogy then look out for the following books:-
